Tin doesn’t rank high among the ancient world’s seven wonder metals, but it was incredibly important. In fact, it was one of the very first metals ever used, when mixed with copper to make bronze. Bronze made things much stronger and robust, and was a huge step forward for human development.
Tin is still very useful today. It is a versatile metal with good ductility and solderability. It is available in matte and bright finishes, with bright tin being more commonly specified for components that will be exposed to light or that require excellent surface coverage. Tin can also be flashed with cobalt to create a two-element coating that resembles chrome and is used in a variety of applications including aerospace products, firearm components and bicycle parts.
A common application for tin gold is as the contact material in electronic connections, particularly those intended to be subject to a lot of contact force. It’s often debated when to use gold contacts vs. tin, and the answer depends on the circumstances of each application.
