chromium carbonate is an odorless, hard, steel-gray, lustrous metal available in crystals or powder. It is used for various applications, including plating of the surface of a metal, as a chemical conversion treatment, and as a catalyst in electrochemical production. chromium carbonate can be manufactured by reacting an aqueous solution of two or more acids with chromium hydroxide. The reaction is performed at a temperature in the range of 10 to 50° C. Generally, the acidic aqueous solution has a pH of 2 or less. chromium carbonate has high solubility in an acid, even in its dry powder state. It can also be dissolved in an acidic slurry state.
The present invention also provides a liquid containing trivalent chromium, wherein the above-described chromium carbonate having high solubility is used as the source of chromium. The liquid containing trivalent chromium can be a plating liquid, or a chemical conversion treatment liquid for the surface of metals such as nickel and zinc.
When the chromium carbonate having high solubility as the source of chromium is added to a plating liquid and the like, inorganic anions such as chloride ions or sulfate ions are gradually accumulated in the plating liquid and the like. In order to maintain the liquid composition of the plating liquid and the like constant, it is necessary to constantly add the source of chromium in an amount corresponding to the consumption of chromium. However, this method is not able to prevent the accumulation of the counteranions in the liquid.
