iron ll phosphate is a mineral that is also known as ferrous phosphate or Fe3(PO4)2. It is an iron salt of phosphoric acid. This compound has many applications and is a valuable source of iron. It is commonly used in fertilizers, slug baits, and some foods fortified with iron. It is also used as an ingredient in lithium ion batteries cathode materials.

It is a brown powder that has a melting point of 180°C. It is odorless. It can be prepared by precipitating a solution of ferrous hydroxide with sodium phosphate or by reacting ferrous chloride with phosphoric acid. It is soluble in acid solutions and in alkali solutions. It is a strong reducing agent and is sometimes used to prevent the oxidation of steel.

Health Effects/Safety Hazards: When inhaled or ingested, this substance can cause eye and skin irritation. It can be toxic if swallowed or inhaled in large amounts. Long-term exposure can result in diarrhea, vomiting, and depression. It can also lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, and liver failure in animals.

In soil, iron and phosphate stick to the particles in the soil and help them bind together. When slug and snail baits containing iron phosphate are applied, the granules stay in place and don’t become airborne. It is not harmful to birds based on studies with quail, and it is practically non-toxic to fish and water fleas. It is also not a concern for groundwater since it doesn’t move with water and does not leach into the environment.
