Potassium bromide is an inorganic chemical compound that has the chemical formula KBr. It is a white crystalline salt that is odorless, salty and slightly bitter in concentrated solutions. It is soluble in water, glycerol, ether and is only slightly hygroscopic. KBr is very toxic and a skin irritant. It is also dangerous if swallowed, as it may cause dizziness and vomiting. It can also irritate the mucous membrane of the stomach.

It has a high boiling and melting point because of its ionic bonding between potassium and bromine. This enables it to absorb large amounts of heat. It is used in photochemistry for the preparation of emulsions and developing agents. It is also a component of clear completion fluids in the petroleum industry and as a chemical intermediate.

When dissolved in water, the ionic bonds disassociate and KBr becomes a hydrate. It is also soluble in alcohols and glycerol. Its vapor is very toxic and can irritate the respiratory tract. It is also a skin irritant and should be handled in a well-ventilated area.

Spills and leaks should be cleaned up immediately, and the contaminated clothing should be washed before reuse. Facilities storing or using KBr should have an eyewash and safety shower available. Employees should be trained to avoid contact with KBr and use proper PPE when handling it. They should also be taught to limit dust generation and provide adequate ventilation to minimize airborne concentrations. If KBr is swallowed, it will cause nausea and vomiting. If inhaled, it will cause headaches and dizziness. It can also irritate the stomach and cause a burning sensation in the mouth.
