Mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin that can cause long-term health problems and is poisonous to humans, fish, birds and land animals. It can also be lethal to babies in utero. In its pure form, elemental mercury is a silvery liquid. It is used in thermometers and some light bulbs. When these items break, there is a risk of inhaling mercury vapor and skin contact.
When emitted to the environment, elemental mercury may oxidise into inorganic mercury or organic mercury compounds (methylmercury). Methyl mercury accumulates in algae eaten by fish. Older predator fish have higher levels of methyl mercury than smaller, non-predator fish. Oral ingestion of methylmercury is the most common route of exposure to mercury for humans.
All forms of mercury are toxic to humans. Symptoms of exposure include tremors, nervousness and muscle weakness. Ingestion of organic mercury compounds can lead to kidney and nerve damage, heart disease, and mental impairment. Exposure to inorganic mercury vapors can cause lung irritation and headache.
Our mercury spill kit contains a powder to convert elemental mercury into an amalgam, which stops dangerous mercury vapors from being emitted. The kit includes clean up tools and PPE in a convenient snap-lock pail. Clear the room of children and pets, and shut down ventilation systems that could spread mercury vapors. Open exterior windows to lower the room temperature and ventilate it with fresh air. Turn off any fan that vents into other rooms and do not run a bathroom or kitchen exhaust, as this can blow mercury vapors back indoors.
