Gold tubing comes in many sizes and wall thicknesses. It can be costly to keep a selection on hand for every project that requires it. This is why some goldsmiths use a technique called tube gold to make quick hinges and other parts of movable component pieces. To make tube gold you draw a piece of the metal down through a hole that is slightly larger than it needs to be (as long as the tube is not too thick). Some people use a core wire which can be made of any material. A hard wire such as stainless steel works best, however. If a core is used it is wise to lubricate it with oil or graphite prior to drawing so that it will not bind up in the hole.

Gold is often used as a coating for objects such as artificial satellites and astronaut helmets that will come into contact with the Sun, to prevent them from being blinded by its radiation. It is also used as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and as a catalyst in organic chemistry.

Researchers have found a way to reduce the weight of gold without using any of the metal alloys normally mixed with it. They have discovered a method to lower the density of gold by mixing it with a matrix of protein fibres and polymer latex, which makes it much more like plastic than conventional gold. The discovery could lead to lighter jewellery and watches, as well as other applications such as aerospace engineering and radiation shielding.
