What is the powder used for 3D Printing with Metal?
Flowability. One of the main characteristics for metal powder is the possibility of flowing through a 3D printer. Materials that have higher flowability are able to be controlled with greater ease and create more consistent products and layers. In addition they tend to make less products with irregular layers. The better flowability of powder implies that it is easy to create a 3D object.
Steel 316L powder Stainless
Powders of stainless steel 316L have been thoroughly studied to determine its effects on AM. It is a representative metal and results can be extrapolated to other alloys. The distribution of size of the powder, according to the 4S method is 9.43 millimeters. This means that the shape factor (PSF) is close to one. The properties of the powder are described in Table 1.
Titanium
Most commonly, the metal alloy that is used with 3D printing is titanium. It is a very durable and durable metal suitable for the manufacture of functional parts prototypes, parts, and other products for military, aerospace as well as automotive applications. It is also biocompatible and is often used for medical implants.
The advantages to titanium powder is numerous and it is gaining popularity in additive manufacturing. It’s close to half the weight of steel, and its unique characteristics make it a good candidate in 3D printing. Titanium is extremely light, resistant to heat also chemically resistant and is biocompatible. Among its many qualities, titanium is especially helpful in motor vehicle and aerospace uses for which weight and weight an object is vital.
Niobium
Niobium is an excellent material to use in 3D printing with metal because it is bio-inert and is easy to work with. In additive manufacturing, it’s used to make niobium-based alloys which are used for aerospace components and engines. This process is called”laser-driven bed fusion of powder” (also known as SLM), and it uses a laser to selectively melt the powder into metals.
Niobium is chemically comparable metal to tantalum and its melting areas are similar. They also share similar electrical and thermal conductivity. These qualities make them well-suited as chemical processors. In fact, they’re often used in the creation of capacitors as well as others electrical components.
