Zinc neodecanoate is an organo-metallic compound that can be used in water treatment applications. It is particularly effective in removing hydrogen sulfide. It has also been shown to have unique solubility compared to zinc carboxylates.
It can be prepared from neodecanoic acid under pressure hvdrogenation and distillation conditions. It is olfactorily pure and free from sulfury/rubbery/phenolic off-notes common to unpurified neodecanoic acid.
This material is a colourless liquid, and can be easily extracted from neodecanoic acids with suitable solvents, such as hexane or isopropanol. It can be distilled on a reflux chromatograph, preferably under reduced pressure.
The material is also readily soluble in the aqueous solutions of the organic acids benzyl chlorohydrate, isobutyl hexyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate and ethyl stearate.
It is an excellent deodorizing agent and is very useful for preventing or suppressing malodour, especially human body malodour, and for suppressing the production of odour in animals, notably dogs, by inhibiting the synthesis of their natural odour-producing enzymes. It is also used for odour control in environments such as hotels, restaurants and supermarkets.
For example, zinc neodecanoate is often incorporated into fragrance-containing deodorant compositions to impart an attractive and lasting scent impression. This is because the malodour-counteracting zinc carboxylates tend to be unsuited for incorporation into these type of formulations as they are prone to react with and reduce the aroma strength of the fragrance ingredient.
